Rate-Based Flow Control Schemes for High-Speed Group Communication

This paper presents a HiPO (High-sPeed Orderpreserving broadcast) protocol which provides highthroughput group communication service on a highspeed single channel network like FDDI. By the HiPO protocol, every application entity can atomically receive all the messages broadcast in the group in the same order as they were sent. This service is an OP (orderpreserving broadcast) one. The execution of the HiPO protocol is coordinated by all the entities in a distributed control scheme. The HiPO protocol supports rate-based ow control and selective retransmission mechanism. In the rate-based ow control among multiple entities, a problem is how to share the receipt rate of the slowest entity in the group. In this paper, we present a ratebased ow control algorithms which provide less PDU loss and fairness on the sharing of the single channel. We also present the evaluation of the HiPO protocol.
